Akin to using any card, an authorisation request is generated when you use your ExpenseIn Card to make a purchase. This request determines whether a transaction is approved or declined and is based on the following:

  1. Is the ExpenseIn account and Cardholder live on ExpenseIn?

  2. Are there sufficient funds held in the Issuing Balance?

  3. Is the card active? (e.g. not blocked, lost, stolen or expired).

  4. Is the transaction within the Spending Controls permitted against the card?

  5. Do the CVV (3 digits on the back of the card), Expiry Date, Address Line 1, and Postcode match?

If any of the above checks fail, the authorisation request will fail, and the transaction will be declined.

Note: If the real-time authorisation request fails at ExpenseIn or times out, the authorisation request is automatically rejected, and the transaction is declined.

Depending on the method of purchase, see the relevant section below for additional checks that are undertaken.

Online transaction

If a transaction is completed online, the cardholder will need to go through 3D Secure (3DS) to complete the transaction.

Within the 3DS check, a text will be sent to the telephone number held against the cardholder’s ExpenseIn Card account. If the incorrect confirmation code is inputted, the transaction will be declined and will display in the authorisation request.

If the cardholder does not complete the 3DS check, no authorisation request is sent, and the transaction is declined.

Point of Sale (POS) transaction

If a transaction is completed at a Point of Sale and requires PIN verification, the cardholder must enter the card’s PIN on the card terminal.

If the cardholder enters their PIN incorrectly, then the transaction is declined, and no authorisation request is sent.

If the cardholder incorrectly enters their card PIN three consecutive times, the PIN becomes blocked. The cardholder will need to reactivate their card to use the card again.
